[ 2019-06-08 ] Houseplants DON'T Really Clean the Air!?

The myth that houseplants, such as spider plants, peace lilies, and English ivy, 

among others, can rid indoor air of toxins came from a 1989 NASA study 

that reported houseplants remove a few harmfun compounds. But most 

people gloss over the fact that it was done in a sealed environment 

with special soil. Also, the density of houseplants needed in an unsealed

environment to even make a dent in the pollution level would be the

equivalent of a crowded plant store. Personally, I couldn't care less 

if they scrub the air of harmful pollutants, because they create a peaceful

atmosphere. And they look great next to a powerful electric air purifier!

 

화초 중에서도 특히 무늬 접란, 스파티펄럼, 잉글리시 아이비 같은 식물이 실내

공기 독소를 제거할 수 있다는 속설은 1989년 나사가 시행한 연구에서 비롯되었다.

당시 이 연구는 화초가 일부 해로운 성분을 제거한다고 보고했다. 그러나 

사람들 대부분은 이것이 밀폐된 확경에서 특수한 흙을 사용해 이루어진 연구라는

점을 대수롭지 않게 넘긴다. 밀폐되지 않은 환경에서 오염도를 조금이라도 

낮추려면 화원만큼이나 화초를 빼곡히 들여놔야 할 것이다. 솔직히 개진적으로

화초가 공기 중에 유해한 오염 물질을 제거하든 아니든 크게 개의치 않는다.

화초는 그 자체로 편안한 분위기를 만들어 주니까. 게다가 강력한 공기 청정기

옆에 두면 얼마나 근사해 보이는지!
